GE offers a solution for effective tube cleaning for all HRSG types. PressureWave+, developed by BANG&CLEAN® Technologies AG, uses controlled pressure waves to penetrate deep into the tube bundle for a more effective and efficient cleaning.

Having a clean heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is integral both for your plant reliability and efficiency. PressureWave+ improves backpressure to near-design specifications, while improving full and minimum CC heat rates and increased plant performance.
IMPROVE HRSG EFFICIENCY
Boiler deposits of iron oxide and ammonium bisulfate on the flue gas side can lead to tube fouling of HRSGs. This reduces the heat transfer efficiency and increases back pressure on an adjoining gas turbine, which can lead to higher operating costs.

Pressure waves generated by the combustion of gas typically propagate at much lower speeds than pressure waves generated by explosives. The method therefore poses no danger for boiler tubes. The method involves no transfer or storage of explosives. The combustible gas mixture is prepared only moments before ignition. Several barriers of shut-off valves and non-return valves prevent gas leakage. All personnel involved in the pressure wave cleanings are trained on the equipment to help ensure no harm comes to any employee or customer’s property.
#4: HOW LONG DOES A CLEANING TAKE?
ONE BUNDLE WOULD TYPICALLY TAKE 1-2 SHIFTS OF 12 HOURS.
THOUGH THIS IS DEPENDANT ON A NUMBER OF VARIABLES:
- Number of modules to be cleaned: this can be determined through inspection and pressure drop measurements during operation
- Ease of access and confined space access requirements
- Preparation activities (equipment set up, opening of manholes, making access holes in upper vestibule) and close out activities (debris removal (air flush and vacuuming), equipment removal, closing of holes in upper vestibule, closing of manholes)
- A key benefit: NO SCAFFOLDING IS REQUIRED

As it requires access to the pressure parts and the HRSG is pressurized during the operation.

Although dry ice (CO2) cleaning is presently the most common cleaning method for HRSGs in the USA, PressureWave+ cleaning is faster, does not require scaffolding, and penetrates deep into the modules.

It is, however, important to have the following checks in place:
- access availability
- any restrictions in the cavities between the pressure part modules
- such restrictions may make it more difficult to move the lance and might also cause a 'shadow' effect in certain areas

#8: HOW OFTEN SHOULD THIS CLEANING BE REPEATED?
IT DEPENDS ON THE FOULING RATE.
Some plants do not require a cleaning for 10 years or more, but most plants with an SCR should be cleaned at every large overhaul, which is every 3-5 years.
For gas fired plants without SCR, the frequency could be every 10 years, depending on sulfur content of the fuel, preservation practices and ambient humidity.
